Pleasure Craft Operator Regulations Clarification

For this coming season all boat operators born after April 1, 1983 or operating a boat under 4m in length must show proof of competency.

Proof of competency can include any one of the following:
1) Proof of having successfully completed a boating safety course in Canada prior to April 1, 1999
2) A pleasure craft operator card from either Canada or the US
3) A completed rental-boat safety checklist (for power-driven rental boats)

If your US guests bring their own boat then the boating regulations in their home state apply.

If your guests are renting a boat from you and do not have their operators card, they can use the Rental-Boat Safety Checklist to comply with the regulations. Please note, a checklist will have to be completed by each individual that intends to operator the boat.

After September 15, 2009, all operators of any sized motorized watercraft will be required to show proof of competency. If your renters do not have their operator’s card from either their home state or Canada, they will be able to use the checklist to serve as proof of competency.
