| TARGETING PIKE - By Reed Froklage
In the spring time after the pike have spawned, you target them in the shallows. Here they are taking advantage of the warm water and the plentiful amounts of forage.
During the transition time of the season, you will find that some large pike are shallow, some are deep and some are in between both. At this time, you focus on structures near a spawning area such as weeds, rocks, points and drop-offs.
Prime summer pike locations include sunken islands, points, mouths to weedy bays, sand bars and straight shorelines. Here pike will lie in wait to ambush their prey. It is also important that these spots are near deep water as pike become stressed by the warm summer water. A lot of people find the summer time very difficult to catch fish, but not on Lake St. Joseph. Some of the biggest and heaviest northern are caught during these months. The reason for this is because these fish begin to build fat stores and muscle mass to carry them through the long cold winter. This excess weight also helps support the production of large amounts of eggs and milt that will be released in the spring.
No matter what the time of year, your chances of landing a massive northern pike on Lake St. Joseph are exceptional!
