| Tips for Releasing Walleye
Lake St. Joseph waters have size limit regulations that require the live release of angled walleye, along with a possession limit of 4 walleye and 4 northern pike. The following are some tips for the successful release of angled walleye.
- Use artificial lures and barbless hooks if you intend to release your catch.
- Land the fish quickly.
- Avoid the use of landing nets constructed of abrasive material that could remove the protective mucous coating of the fish.
- Minimize handling and unhook the fish while still in the water if possible.
- If the fish is hooked deeply, cut the line and release the fish.
- Never place your fingers through the gills or in the eyes of a fish you intend to release.
- Artificial air bladder deflation (fizzing) for walleye caught in deep water is not recommended.
- Never place walleye on a stringer if they are to be released.
- Ensure the fish is breathing, in an upright position and can swim away under its own power before releasing.
- If resuscitation is required, move the fish gently backward and forward through the water so that water passes over the gills.
- Gently release the fish headfirst.
Remember: The future of fishing is in your hands!
