A Great Fishing Quote from Famous Canadian Rick Hansen
Why is fishing such a passion?
“Fishing can be as hard-core and dynamic as you want. It can be the art or the adventure of getting to the spot. It can be strategic, tactical, philosophical; it can be spiritual, or emotional. There’s a whole range of metaphors and opportunities. When you start actually catching fish, it explodes from a moment of solitude, reflection and social opportunity to one of chaos.”
In 1973 Rick Hansen, an athletic 15 year old, was involved in an automobile accident that left him a paraplegic. Although he could no longer walk, Rick was determined as ever to compete; he won 19 international wheelchair marathons and represented Canada at the 1984 Olympic Games.
In the spring of 1985, Rick set out on his Man in Motion World Tour to raise funds and awareness for spinal cord injury. The Man in Motion World Tour came to an end two years later in Vancouver, BC with Rick having wheeled over 40,000km. Not only did he raise $26 million during his journey but he also raised the awareness of the potential of people with disabilities.
As the President and CEO of the Rick Hansen Man in Motion Foundation, Rick remains dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with spinal cord injury. He is also a very active member of his community, serving on several boards and appearing as a motivational speaker and positive role model for children at schools nationwide. His passion for fishing is demonstrated through his involvement with the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society and the Pacific Salmon Endowment Fund Society.
Rick currently resides in Richmond, BC with his wife Amanda and their 3 children. For more information on Rick Hansen and the Man in Motion Foundation, please visit www.rickhansen.com
