The Top 10 Walleye Waters in Ontario - Where to Go Between the O's
Lake St. Joseph Ranks at Number 4
In Northwestern Ontario, an amazing walleye fishery few anglers have discovered is Lake St. Joseph, the "Erie of the North". Situated almost at the end of Highway 599, north and east of the town of Sioux Lookout, the walleye fishing in Lake St. Joe is better than most fly-in waters.
Dozens of inflowing streams and rivers, scores of islands, a ragged shoreline, a structurally complex bottom, and an excellent forage base underpin the thriving 150 000 acre fishery.
Perhaps the most important ingredient is the Lake St. Joseph Accord, a unique agreement between the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and the tourist camps on the lake to control access to the fishery and to promote the selective harvest of fish.
According to Phil Grace, 25 to 75 walleyes per angler per day are common. Plenty of big fish. And guides are releasing many of them. Lake St. Joe also is a tremendous pike fishery.
